IN PHARONIC EGYPT AROMATIC HERBS AND THEIR ESSENTIAL OILS were treasured, their use not only formed a key part of daily ritual but were also an important element in the secret ceremonies of the Nile valley's great temple complexes as priests anointed deities with richly scented oils. Incense was particularly important, burned during religious rituals, its heavy scent cleansed the air and drove away negative spirits at funerals. Cardomon, lotus, rush-reed, honey, wine and myrrh were amongst the special ingredients used by the ancient Egyptians, steeped in olive oil their scents were slowly infused to create delicate perfumes.

THE ANCIENT ART OF AROMATHERAPY

LEARNING FROM EASTERN WISDOM, the Greeks believed that the fresh scents rising from living plants helped maintain their own health. Roses, carnations, lilies and marjoram were all used in their perfumes, the odours of specific scents were inhaled to heal many inner ailments.

IT IS ALSO RECORDED that in Greece oils infused with white violet or quince were believed to ease upset stomachs, whilst perfumes made from grape leaves helped clear the head and rose garlands were known to banish headaches.

HERE IN THE US NATIVE AMERICANS lived for thousands of years in harmony with the earth, they too learned from their environment and developed a complex use of wild plants. Their reverence for the Earth and its myriad forms of life led these peoples to understand that plants themselves contained their own energies.

Fragrant cedar wood was used by plains Indians to banish nightmares and nervous conditions, whilst scented plants were particularly used for magical purposes.
